The Chelsea Flower Show, one of the largest horticultural events of the year, hosted on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, London UK and organised by the Royal Horticultural Society every year since 1912 ( minus a few years during the wars). Alas it 157 000 ticket holders , including myself, will ve to be content with a virtual online show with visits to growers and existing gardens. I always look forward in finding out who has been awarded what medal for their flower, plant, display or garden design. I love finding out about new style trends but mostly the sustainable gardening tips are my favourite.
It has been 10 years since I last been so I was looking forward to it immensely so to capture the spirit of Chelsea I made Pimm’s Cup and enjoyed it in the garden.
PIMM’s FIZZ – Back in 1823 James Pimms’ son served in the family owned oyster house in London, a gin- based drink with fruit and herbs to aid digestion. It was served it in a pitcher kind of vessel called “No 1 Cup”. Years later this herbal and citrus alcoholic drink became very popular at Wimbledon tennis tournament and indeed at the Chelsea Flower Show.
To make the Pimm’s Fizz ( it is easy the recipe is on the bottle): add 2 part sparking lemonade to 1 part Pimm’s, add cucumber, lemon and mint and top with ice. The lemonade generally used is ginger ale.
I used GIMBER, a non- alcoholic ginger concentrate made in Belgium , I added sparkling water from filtered tap water and my soda stream made it all bubbly. This eliminates added sugars and other nastiness and no plastic to recycle!
As The Queen yearly opens the event, and many Royal Family members attend and even design a garden ( the Duchess Kate did last year) , I pulled out the tiara for the occasion, of course.
